Pippa has undertaken specialised training in Perinatal and Infant Mental Health, as well as Compassion Focussed Therapy, Schema Therapy, and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. She has also attended specialised training in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy and been involved in the development of adult and adolescent DBT programs within the private practice space.
Having started her career in the field of social work, Pippa developed a solid base in systemic thinking and family therapy. Her practice framework therefore considers the broader systems and relationships in which problems are occurring, not just the person themselves. Her treatment style is also influenced by attachment, relational, strengths based, and narrative therapies.
Pippa draws on various evidence-based therapies to fit your individual needs and develop a collaborative treatment plan. She offers both short term and longer-term therapy depending on need.
Compassion Focussed Therapy
CFT is an evidence-based therapy developed by Prof Paul Gilbert which aims to develop an individual's capacity to cultivate self-compassion. Self-directed compassion can help humans with regulating mood, anxiety and feelings of safety, particularly those that are prone to feelings of self-criticism and shame. Kristin Neff describes self-compassion as "doing a U-turn and giving yourself the same compassion you’d naturally show a friend when you’re struggling or feeling badly about yourself. It means being supportive when you’re facing a life challenge, feel inadequate, or make a mistake".
Schema Foccussed Therapy
Schema-Focussed Therapy is effective with helping people to change more longstanding patterns of behaviour or relational patterns. It focusses on identifying unmet childhood needs and how these may have unintentionally created unhelpful patterns over time. Navigating the journey toward parenthood can prompt memories or emotional experiences which can make managing relationships with children, partners, parents, and others more difficult. Schema Therapy can help with processing challenging moments and early experiences. This treatment uses cognitive-behavioural and experiential exercises.
Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy
CBT is a therapeutic approach that focusses on the interrelationship of thinking-feeling-behaviour. It aims to help change unhelpful cognitions (thoughts) and behaviours, and replace them with more helpful statements and actions. Beck Institute | Understanding CBT | Beck Institute
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy
Developed by Marsha Linehan to help people with diagnoses of Borderline Personality Disorder, DBT teaches skills that most people can find useful in everyday life. It aims to hold in mind differing truths and the idea of finding a middle path - such as accepting that life has been difficult and painful, whilst working towards change. At its foundation are the building blocks of mindfulness, as well as emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.
Mindfulness
"Mindfulness is awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgementally,” - Jon Kabat-Zinn. Since emerging in the 1980s, substantial research has mounted demonstrating improvements in mental and physical health with regular mindfulness practice.
Other modalities
Other approaches Pippa may draw on include attachment-based and strengths-based therapies, family therapy, and narrative therapy.
